Torres Strait Island Regional Council represent fifteen ‘outer’ island communities and manage the treaty agreement between mainland Australia and Papua New Guinea. We are committed to the prosperity and sustainability of our unique region.
Reporting to the Executive Director Corporate Services the Manager Legal and Risk Services at Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) is a pivotal position responsible for the effective strategic management of the Legal Services team. This encompasses providing accurate, ethical, and timely advice across diverse areas such as legal matters, native title, land issues, governance, policy, and compliance. The Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring the Council’s operations align with legislative standards and cultural considerations specific to the Torres Strait region.
Engagement with employees and community representatives is crucial, as you’ll be developing tailored legal solutions that balance both legal principles and traditional lore. Additionally, you will offer advice on the Council’s roles and responsibilities under Queensland Local Government legislation, oversee Native Title claims management, and provide strategic legal advice. Managing risk is a key responsibility, involving providing overall risk management guidance to the Council.
Desirable qualifications include a Bachelor of Laws, a current Queensland Driver’s Licence, and knowledge of Torres Strait languages.
